Why Focus on Trauma?
At Juniper Canyon, we see many clients who enter treatment seeking immediate relief for mental health or substance abuse issues. Our goal is to assess and treat these issues. However, we often find that underlying the presenting problem is some form of trauma. Understanding a client’s trauma plays a significant role in treatment and is essential for healing to take place. Research indicates that trauma is often the root cause of self harm, beginning or continued substance use, self sabotage, destructive behaviors, and mental health disorders such as anxiety and/or depression. Treating someone for a mental health or substance abuse disorder without also working through their trauma may lead to insignificant change or repeated relapses. It is our belief that treating trauma is of the utmost importance, and has the potential to stop the revolving door of treatment and relapse.
