Our Modern Culture of Disordered Eating

Juniper Canyon is not an Eating Disorder treatment program, however we recognize that an alarming trend in young adults, especially women, is disordered eating and/or diagnosable Eating Disorders. We have noticed in the last couple of years that more of our clients have either been diagnosed with Eating Disorders, have participated in an Eating Disorder program, or have self-identified that disordered eating is a problem for them.

Many have struggled with their relationship to food and their body image.

Our hybrid program naturally has a balanced mix of activity and wholesome nutrition. Clients are provided a well-rounded variety of food and recipes to take turns cooking for themselves both at Base and over the campfire in the field. However, we also recognize that for many of our clients, over-exercising, binge eating, purging, or restricting have been problems in the past and these problems don’t disappear when they enter our program.

To help individual clients as well as to consult and advise the program as a whole, we have on our team a licensed Nutritionist/Dietician who specializes in Eating Disorders. She participates in our Treatment Team Meetings on a weekly basis, is available for therapeutic consultations, and sees clients in individual sessions as needed. She is a valuable member of our team and helps us to deliver disordered eating-informed care to our clients.

Intuitive Eating as a Path to Healing

Intuitive Eating is an approach to healing disordered eating which integrates instinct, emotion, and rational thought. It was created by two dietitians, Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch in 1995. Intuitive Eating is an evidence-based model that empowers those who struggle with disordered eating to cultivate attunement with their body, learning to recognize cues related to both biological needs and psychological needs. Intuitive Eating helps people to remove harmful rules and beliefs surrounding food, exercise, and their bodies.
